4GB RAM and ATOM CPU

The Atom CPU has a fixed addressable range of 4GB. When 4GB RAM is installed in the system, this will result in overlapping of the BIOS address space. A loss of 512MByte is expected, apart from the display buffer size allocation.

How to setup using AFUDOS to flash the BIOS

  1. Download the Unetbootin utility (http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net) to download FreeDOS and install onto USB drive
  2. Copy AFUDOS and the BIOS to the USB drive
  3. Restart
  4. Load FreeDOS LiveCD with HiMEM + EMM386
  5. Change drive to B:\ or C:\
  6. Flash the BIOS

Make sure you look at the Readme.txt for the AFUDOS command line. Copy exactly what is in the Readme file.

How to reset the BIOS to default.

There are 3 ways to reset the BIOS back to default settings.

1) Load BIOS Failsafe default.

To load BIOS Failsafe default, go into the BIOS and just load BIOS Failsafe default.  It can be found on the main BIOS menu or in the Exit menu.

2) Change the Jumper setting of JP1. (Consult manual to make sure there it is JP1)

To be safe, make sure turn off your computer.

The jumper on JP1 are on Pins 1 and 2. Move the jumper to Pins 2 and 3 for 3 seconds then place it back onto Pins 1 and 2.

3) Remove the CMOS battery.

Remove the CMOS battery for about 2 minutes and then place the battery back.

Motherboard/Mini PC information

To go past the 2TB barrier (eg. to fully use a 3TB Htd), check these following changes:

  1. BIOS need to be set to "EFI" (Extensible Firmware Interface) type.
Not every product comes with EFI BIOS.
ZOTAC products with EFI BIOS: Intel H67, Intel H61, AMD "Fusion" Series.
  2. Different way to create the Htd partition type is to use the new GPT (GUID Partition Table)
  3. Operating System must be 64-bit Windows.

Shared Memory:

Chipset Series Maximum Shared Memory
Nvidia ION Maximum shared memory is 512MB
Intel NM10 chipset
(plus Nvidia Next Gen ION Graphic)
Graphic memory size is fixed at 512MB (dedicated RAM Chip)
Intel chipsets
(NM10, G31, G41, G43, G45, H55, H67 Intel built in Graphic Controller)
Shared memory size is "dynamic" and automatically controlled by the Intel display driver software

Please note the following fact about HDMI (digital audio) - number of audio channels available:

1) Depends on the capability of the Application Program (Player)
Most players are capable of multi channel playback

2) Depends on the capability of the software title (eg. Movie) being played
Most titles (DVD, BluRay) are carrying multi-channel.

3) Depends on the audio capability of the playback instrument - the TV Set, or the Hi Fi Audio Equipment

Most TV Sets, or HDMI Display Monitors (with digital audio capability) comes with two pieces of built-in speakers (stereo config). It is very seldom to find HDMI monitors with more than two built in speakers. Therefore these HDMI Display Monitors are most likely carrying "digital audio decoder up to two channel only". Windows (display driver / HDMI audio driver) is able to detect this capability from the monitor, and only allows two channel audio shown in the "Sound " Playback Properties. This is the case when the the HDMI output goes directly to the HDMI Display Monitor.

If the user expects to get more than two channels, probably he is NOT directly attaching the HDMI cable to the HDMI monitor / TV Set. Instead, the HDMI cable will go to a Hi Fi Audio Visual Equipment (AV Amplifier). He should expect the AV Amplifier to play multiple audio channels from separate speakers (not the TV's built in speakers), right ? This is the key point.

Moreover, it is known that some AV Amplifiers allows different ways for the HDMI signal (from PC) to feed to a TV / HMDI Monitor :

(A) Directly feed the signal to the HDMI monitor / TV, the AV Amplifier looks "transparent".
The PC will see the HDMI / TV Monitor as if a direct connection, therefore it detects that the audio playback device is only capable of two channels. Windows allows only two channel playback in this case.

(B) The HDMI signal will have the video component and audio components separated - video component goes to the display monitor / TV, audio component being handled internally by the AV Amplifier. The PC will see the AV Amplifier (not the display monitor) as the audio playback device. Up to 6 - 8 channels capable. Then Windows will allow multiple audio channel playback.

Power Supply Information

The main concern for PSU rating are the following factors:

  1. Current capability at the +12V rail
For reliable operation, and to take care of transient surge during CPU loading changes,  +12V rail should be capable of 15 Amp (or higher)
  2. Current capability at the +5V Standby DC line (from PSU)
    This item is often overlooked.
The motherboard's power-up logic, and Suspend circuitry, are heavily relying on the current capability of "+5VStandby" line from the PSU.

At least 1.5Amp is needed. Not every PSU can guarantee this.
Failure to meet this current capability will result in difficulties to start-up, or fail to wake from suspend.
