I just got my 8400 GS in the mail. I followed all the instructions in the install guide, but my computer won't recognize the new graphics card. I have a Compaq with an internal NVIDIA 6150 SE (less than 518MB). The instructions said to uninstall it, turn off, insall the 8400, turn on, install drivers. I do this and every time i restart my computer it auto reinstalls the drivers for the 6150 and my computer wont recognize the 8400. What can I do?

Hi boswellsoccer, and welcome to the Z-Spot forums!

Once you install your GeForce 8400GS, plug in your monitor cable to the 6150. When you get into your operating system, see if it recognizes the 8400GS. If it is recognized, that's when you should install the latest Nvidia drivers. Once installed, I recommend a reboot and plug in the monitor adapter to the 8400GS, and power back on your computer. It should work just fine. Let me know if that does not work.

Thanks for the welcome. What does it mean "plug in your monitor cable to the 6150?" There is no monitor cable on the 6150. This is the entire reason I'm having trouble with the install. There isn't a physical graphics card already in the computer when I open it up. All I can see is a silver box with a fan attached to it which I can only assume is the CPUs, 2 RAM sticks, some strange looking card with a phone hookup input (I think my computer has fax capabilities; I noticed a strange fax-line program in the midst of all of this), the HDD, DVD, and the big power source box. Do some computers have graphics cards that are somehow part of the CPU or HDD? My computer tells me the 6150 is a hardware device, but I can find no physical evidence of it to remove and replace with the 8400. I'm very confused and frustrated at this point over what I thought would be a simple install :(

Thanks in advance for any help offered!

boswellsoccer,

By "plug in your monitor cable to the 6150", I meant to plug in your VGA or DVI cable to the motherboard's I/O panel (input/output, where there are USB 2.0 ports, maybe a printer port, etc. click here for an image of the VGA port) so you are able to view Windows and confirm if Windows sees the 8400GS.
