Hi, I have a Zotac GF6100-F-E AMD motherboard that I used for a custom-built system. I have an internal card reader that I installed using the two USB headers on the board, but neither the card reader nor the front USB ports have any response when I insert cards. No lights flashing, no volumes mounting--nothing. I double checked that the cables were inserted properly onto the headers and I then headed into the BIOS. I saw that my USB devices were enabled and when I rebooted all the rear ports worked just fine. Are there any BIOS settings I should try to change or if I should maybe see if there is a way to flash the BIOS with an update? Thanks for any help you have for me.

Ok I received an e-mail asking me some questions on me and my motherboards behaviour, so:

Hello Eric

It is possible that the USB headers on the motherboard happen to become defective or short out only recently.

Did you do anything different on your machine prior to this issue happening?

For the USB devices you were using on it before, are you still able to use them on a separate machine?

Please let us know

Thank You

Hansel

  • Nothing was really modified before I noticed this problem had occured, when I noticed that it was unresponsive the only thing I did different was reseat the connectors and then swapped them out on the headers
  • All USB devices I had tried work perfectly fine on different machines

I am seriously tempted in recording my BIOS settings with a camcorder and uploading it to YouTube or something, if not for the fun of it :teehee:

I am looking into using FreeDOS to help with the BIOS flashing (I need to look into it more though, don't wanna brick my motherboard): How to Update BIOS in Ubuntu

If worse comes to worst I am wondering if the nice folks over at ZOTAC can help me with an RMA for servicing the board and possibly saving me from buying a new one. Thanks for any help given.

Hi Eric,

Were you able to resolve the USB problems?

Sorry, I have had no success with any troubleshooting solution I could come up with, and I decided not to try to flash the BIOS. I would like to submit a request to Zotac for their terms to send in an RMA for proper service. I will have to contact support through e-mail for this situation. I really just wish those USB ports would work!

It is quite unfortunate. Maybe the headers were shorted out somehow, or your board was a bad egg in a basket. I hope the RMA process is as painless as possible.

I had motherboard USB issues as well (from another manufacturer) and I can sympathize on your situation. It is unfortunate that things do not always work 100% as intended. All we can really do is wait patiently until our replacement arrives!
